Mental Health Coverage - Anxiety Disorders

Many programs do not offer adequate protection for Mental Health problems such as schizophrenia, ADHD, and panic attacks. Many people do not seem to realize that treating panic attacks requires both medication and frequent visits to the psychiatrist. The cost of therapy adds up over time, becoming a crushing burden if wellness insurance policy policy does not offer financial aid. Unfortunately, even when family wellness insurance policy policy protection offer Mental Health protection of wellness, they often charge raise your deductible and seriously limit therapy. This creates it difficult for those with psychological problems to get the therapy they need. Fortunately, it is only a matter of time before insurance policy companies will be required to offer primary protection for panic attacks.

Insurers realize that Mental Health problems often require lifetime therapy. This creates them somewhat reluctant to cover the cost of medication. From a business perspective, insurance policy companies believe that covering psychological problems will make them lose money. While this might be true, it creates the lives of people with psychological wellness issues difficult. Many insurance policy companies compensate for potential losses by requiring higher premiums and insurance deductibles. They hope that by seriously limiting the amount of Mental Health protection of wellness they offer, people with psychological problems will not file too much claims.

The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act passed two years ago addresses some of these concerns. The act requires insurance providers to offer Mental Health protection of wellness advantages equal to those provided for other health conditions. In other words, this law will do away with excessively high insurance deductibles and low therapy caps. Unfortunately, this law only is applicable to group wellness programs and businesses with more than 50 employees. It also does not require wellness insurance providers to offer primary protection for Mental Health problems. It is a significant step in health good care reform, however.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that was passed this year should further decrease the gap between Mental Health protection of wellness insurance policy protection of other types of conditions and surgical procedures. This act, among many other things, states that insurances programs sold through state exchanges must give a beginning of protection for Mental Health problems. This law is applicable to businesses and individual programs. The law will go into effect in 2014. This will greatly increase the scope of insurance policy policy and will offer insurance policy to an additional 32 million Americans. Although these laws increase protection for panic attacks and other psychological wellness issues, there is still a long way to go before everyone with a disorder can receive adequate good care.
